Zelda Williams on Her ‘Dead of Summer’ Role: ‘I’m a Bit of a Mystery’
In a joint effort, Freeform screened the first episode of its new summer series “Dead of Summer” following a “Pretty Little Liars” panel at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Wednesday night. The cast kept the mysteries under wraps, especially relating to Zelda Williams‘ character.
“I’m a bit of a mystery and a surprise, I think that’s the most interesting thing about my character. You get a little taste in the first episode,” said Williams, who is the daughter of the late Robin Williams.
The season will delve into the backstories of young characters who attended camp in their youth and are now back as counselors at Camp Stillwater. Although there is one character who is a fish out of water.
“Amy Hughes is the new girl. It’s the first time she’s at camp. And it’s a really scary camp,” said Elizabeth Lail of her character.
But despite the show being “scary” or “terrifying” as many of the cast members described it, the feeling on set was quite the opposite.
“Between takes we’re all just laughing and we all get along so well that it’s ironic given the dark scenes we have to do,” said Williams.
But Lail, on the other hand, did have some scary moments on set.
“Alberto [Frezza], who plays Garrett, is constantly trying to scare me. He was hiding behind these hanging mannequins on a rack and I had passed by them so many times in the dark but I hadn’t seen them, and he flashed a light on them and I had a death scream! It was so scary,” said Lail.
“Even the people who play, I’m going to call them ‘the hauntees,’ their makeup is so scary I don’t even want to talk to them on set,” she added.
“Dead of Summer” premieres June 28 at 9 p.m. on Freeform.
