Yahoo Screen to Premiere Award-Winning 'One Chance' This Fall

The Weinstein Company — which earlier this month gave the beloved action drama Snowpiercer an early VOD release —  today announced another unexpected distribution deal: This fall, the company will unveil the drama One Chance exclusively on Yahoo Screen, where it will be available for free for ten days prior to its theatrical release. One Chance, directed by The Devil Wears Prada helmer David Frankel, follows the true-life story of Paul Potts, an amateur opera singer who became a viral sensation after he appeared on Britain’s Got Talent; he’s played by Broadway star James Corden, who won the Tony for Best Actor for his performance in 2012’s acclaimed One Man, Two Guvnors (Simon Cowell, a judge on Britain’s Got Talent whose agog reaction to Potts’ voice on the show helped send it viral, is a producer on the film.) The film premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival, and won a handful of subsequent awards during festival stops in Chicago in Denver.

The decision is the latest in a year in which several high-profile on-demand releases — including not only Snowpiercer, but also the well-received indie thrillers Blue Ruin and Cold July — have forced filmmakers and distributors to continue rethinking and rejiggering traditional release platforms. Still, releasing a movie for free online prior to its theatrical release is a relatively untested formula — which may explain why Weinstein thought it was worth the Chance. Look for it here on Yahoo this fall.
