‘X-Men,’ ‘Purge’ Sequels Debut in Top Two Spots on DVD, Blu-ray Disc Sales Charts
“X-Men: Apocalypse,” the latest entry in the successful superhero franchise, earned 20th Century Fox the top spot on both national home video sales charts for the week ended Oct.9.
The horror film “The Purge: Election Year,” the third film in the franchise from Universal Pictures, debuted at a distant No. 2 on the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales. The film – at $79 million a bigger commercial success than its two predecessors – sold about 16% as many units as “X-Men,” which generated $155.4 million in domestic box office receipts.
“Election Year” could only muster a No. 4 debut on NPD’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, even though 51% of total unit sales came from the high-definition format, according to NPD data.
Universal Pictures’ “Warcraft” slipped to No. 4 on the overall disc sales charts and No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. The fantasy actioner, based on the popular video game series of the same name, had debuted at No. 1 on both charts the previous week.
Another sophomore, Warner’s “Central Intelligence,” finished the week at No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 6 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart. Walt Disney Studios’ “Beauty and the Beast” slipped to No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart and No. 7 on the overall disc sales chart.
The No. 5 spot on the overall disc sales chart went to Walt Disney’s “Hocus Pocus,” up three spots from the prior week. On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart the No. 5 position went to Marvel’s Disney-distributed “Captain America: Civil War.”
NPD research shows that “X-Men” generated 67% of its total first-week unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, just shy of the 72% “Warcraft” posted its first week in stores. In week 2, Blu-ray Disc still accounted for 65% of total “Warcraft” unit sales.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, the Sony Pictures thriller “The Shallows” remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week, while Warner’s “Me Before You,” a romantic drama with Emilia Clark (of “Game of Thrones” fame), rose to No. 2, knocking Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” to No. 3.
Rounding out the top five were “Captain America: Civil War” at No. 4 and Universal Pictures’ “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” at No. 5, switching positions from the prior week.
