'X-Men' Producer Says Channing Tatum Gambit Movie Still a Go

We are now two years past the date when we thrilled to the news that Channing Tatum would be taking on the role of Gambit, the beloved yet somehow underutilized superhero of X-Men fame. But the time has flown by and we’re still lacking a standalone feature with our favorite Cajun mutant.

Simon Kinberg, producer of the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four films, gave an update to That Hashtag Show at the Saturn Awards. He told the show, “We have a great script on that and hope to shoot the movie at the beginning of spring next year.”

What else do we know about the movie? Not a lot. It will be directed by Doug Liman of Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith fame. It was supposed to be released this October, but you know, they haven’t filmed it yet, so that’s not happening.

If you need a reminder on the character, Gambit was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and and Jim Lee. He’s a mutant with the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. His favorite demonstration of that power is through his trademark playing cards. He’s a bit of a Casanova, a quality that was probably intended to be charming but often comes across as creepy.

He’s been seen on the silver screen before — Taylor Kitsch first portrayed him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was … it definitely happened, and that’s about the kindest thing we can say about that. So, here’s hoping the next attempt is better. Channing Tatum has wanted to play the character for a while now, and Doug Liman has made some fun action blockbusters, so there’s reason to be optimistic.
