Final 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer: Wolverine Joins the Battle

The new full trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse begins by focusing on the power of Oscar Isaac and ends with a cameo from the most-beloved mutant in the franchise’s history.

The trailer opens with images of Isaac’s Apocalypse, an immortal god who awakens from a long slumber and, as implied in previous teasers for the latest Bryan Singer mutant saga, is so over Earth that he decides to reboot things with some help from a quartet of recruited mutant followers patterned after the Bible’s four horsemen.

One of those horsemen is Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, whose intense screaming in this clip suggests he’ll flip to the dark side after an internal struggle and, presumably, an external struggle with his friend, James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven moves front and center in opposition to these forces of evil, mentoring the next generation of X-Men (and X-Women) — including Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops and Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey — to join the frontlines of the battle.

“It’s all of us against a god,” Nicholas Hoult’s Hank McCoy says in a voice-over. And he really means all of us: That quick shot of intimidating claws at the end of the trailer confirms that Wolverine will make at least a brief appearance in this, the ninth X-Men movie.

The idea that Hugh Jackman would show up in this film is not entirely a surprise, as it’s been rumored and discussed before. Still, I wish they had left that Wolverine shot out of the trailer. So many teasers are released for tentpole movies that, by the time they show up in theaters, it often feels like we’ve seen the good parts already. Presumably there are plenty of good parts in X-Men: Apocalypse that will be unveiled when the movie hits theaters on May 27. But it still would have been more satisfying to go into it not entirely sure whether Wolverine and his manly sideburns would make an appearance.
