Wonder Woman Is Older Than You, and Other New 'Batman v Superman' Revelations
Turns out that the elder superhero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (in theaters March 25) isn’t Ben Affleck’s “older, broken” Batman; it’s Gal Gadot’s remarkably well-preserved Wonder Woman. The new Empire cover story on the film has revealed (via Comic Book Movie) that the Amazon heroine is literally ancient: 5,000 years old, to be exact. Below, a few more new things we’ve learned about Bats, Supes, and Wonder Woman, including tidbits from the Empire story, brand new photos, and two TV spots that delve into the ultimate superhero showdown.
Wonder Woman retired prior to the events of Batman v. Superman.
Her civilian identity as Diana Prince is alive and well, but according to actress Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman retired from the superhero business years ago “because she’s seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight.”

Batman (Ben Affleck) in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’
Wonder Woman will be a “feminist icon,” but the movies will “have some fun with it.”
Executive producer Deborah Snyder says that Batman v Superman will introduce a “very timely” new character in Wonder Woman, paving the way for the Wonder Woman solo movie (which opens June 2017 and takes place during World War I). “Her sexuality is part of her power, but she is also a feminist icon,” Snyder told Empire. Looking ahead, she described the solo film as an origin story that looks at “the role of women throughout history,” in both a pointed and humorous way. “You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it,” she said.

Batman wants to kill Superman, even if he’s 99 percent a good guy.
Bruce Wayne is taking his whole vigilante schtick to a new level in Batman v Superman. In the TV spot below, a seething Bruce Wayne explains why Superman, who leveled much of Metropolis during his battle with Zod in Man of Steel, deserves to die at Batman’s hands. “He’s the one who brought the war to us. Count the dead. Thousands of people. What’s next, millions?” asks Wayne. “He has the power to wipe out the entire human race and if we believe there is even a 1 percent chance he is our enemy, we have to take it as an absolute certainty. And we have to destroy him.” (Producer Charles Roven confirmed the severity of Batman’s new worldview in Empire, calling him “not only the cop… he has also become the jury and executioner.”)
Superman wants to drive Batman into permanent retirement.
“This Bat vigilante is like a one-man reign of terror,” Clark Kent fumes in a second new TV spot (below). Later, a direct confrontation between the two heroes reveals Superman threatening the Caped Crusader, saying, “Next time they shine your light in the sky, don’t go to it. The Bat is dead. Buried.”
A new villain is on the horizon.
One of Empire’s newly released images from Batman v Superman further hints that the DC comics villain Darkseid (pronounced “Darkside”) will face down our heroes. There has been no formal announcement as to whether the godlike warmonger will appear in the film, but his flying minions, the Parademons, showed up in the last trailer — and the apocalyptic landscape below shows Darkseid’s Omega symbol drawn in the sand. Since BvS already has a major villain in the character Doomsday, the Darkseid teases could be leading up to a confrontation in the next Batman-Superman-Wonder Woman vehicle, the Justice League films.
