'Wonder Woman' Comes of Age, Kicks Butt in First Glimpse of New Movie

This Wonder Woman doesn’t do disco.

One thing abundantly clear in the initial clip released Tuesday on the Kevin Smith-hosted special, DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League: The campy vibe of the old Lynda Carter TV series is ancient history.

Watch Carter’s ‘70s version of Wonder Woman in action:

The new sword-swinging warrior princess, played by Gal Gadot, means serious business. DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, who appeared on the special with Smith, called Wonder Woman “the best fighter in the DC universe. She has strength and speed, and she’s been training her whole life for war.” The character, to be introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (out March 25), has an eponymous showcase movie slated for June 23, 2017. Hard to believe, but that will be the first solo Wonder Woman feature film in the character’s 75-year history.

The Patty Jenkins-helmed Wonder Woman, teased during The CW’s DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League special, will tell the Amazonian’s origin story, which begins on the Greek island of Themyscira (a.k.a. Paradise Island) and takes her to WWI Europe, where, based on the early footage, she makes some quick work of German soldiers.

And, of course, she adopts her own specs-sporting alter ego, Diana Prince. Those glasses will keep her identity safe.

“We’re going to see her coming of age, the entire history, what’s her mission,” says Gadot in the clip.

Adds Chris Pine, who plays love interest Steve Trevor: “Telling a story like this now is pivotal and important, the story of a very powerful woman.”
