Wolverine's Entire History Gets the Downbeat Treatment in Fan-Re-edited 'Logan' Trailer

Marvel fans are still geeking out over the first trailer for Logan, James Mangold’s radical new take on adamantium-clawed X-Man Wolverine, who’ll be played once again — presumably for the last time — by Hugh Jackman. The promo’s downbeat vision of a future in which mutants are mostly extinct and Jackman’s hero roams the desert like some sort of diminished Western loner became an instant online hit. And now, one YouTuber has seen fit to coat the character’s prior outings in a similar atmosphere of fatalistic bleakness.

In a new video posted by afauclair (watch it above), the Logan trailer is re-assembled using material from Fox’s previous X-Men and Wolverine films, all of which is set to Johnny Cash’s cover version of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” In essence, the clips from Jackman’s earlier adventures are presented as his memories, which is a shrewd way of providing a primer on the character’s long cinematic history — as well as a means of suggesting that Logan will be the world-weary, post-apocalyptic culmination of everything the character has endured over the past 16 years.

While it’s still not as affecting as the actual Logan trailer (watch it below), afauclair’s fan edit does a nice job casting Wolverine’s entire saga as one of grief, trauma, and loss — and should only further stoke excitement for Jackman’s presumed final movie in the role, which slashes into theaters on March 3, 2017.
