'Godzilla' Extended Look Highlights Personal Loss and Colossal Destruction

With every new trailer that hits for “Godzilla,” we get more tantalizing looks at the big guy and the destruction he’ll be bringing soon to movie theaters everywhere. But what’s most striking about latest “Extended Look” at the upcoming revamp is it reveals what might be a major spoiler: the death of a major character played by an Oscar-winning actor early in the film.

The Extended Look opens with Sandra Brody (Juliette Binoche) and Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) hard at work at what appears to be a nuclear power plant, with Sandra in protective gear while running some sort of drill or experiment. Before you can exclaim “D’oh!” Homer Simpson-style, there’s a major accident that appears to claim Sandra’s life … and has some considerable detrimental effect on the environment.

It’s unclear whether the accident causes the re-awakening of Godzilla (we know he first appeared several decades ago from earlier trailers) or if Godzilla is the cause of the accident, but it does set up why Cranston’s character is so personally invested in tracking the beast. Soon after, we’re bearing witness to a Hawaiian beach resort getting hit with sudden flooding … and a nocturnal appearance by one very large uninvited guest.

From there, you know the (evacuation) drill — military jets getting tossed into the ocean like mere metal pests, the Golden Gate Bridge going through its latest cinematic trauma and a handful of tantalizing glimpses of the Monster King himself.

Goodness, this thing looks big. And we mean the movie itself, as that goes without saying when it comes to you-know-who.

Godzilla" opens May 16.
