With a 'Sonic' Movie Coming, Here's a Look at Video Game Movies That Have Worked
Sega recently announced it will be making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie with Sony, to hit theaters in 2018. It’ll be a mix of live action and CGI that nobody asked for.
Aside from the fact that this sounds like the worst video game adaptation ever, just hearing about another one of these is enough to trigger your video game movie PTSD (cue the clips from Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter).
So to cleanse our palates, let’s take a look at video game movies that have worked, or at least kind of worked.
There was 1995’s Mortal Kombat, which — for better or worse — they got right. We got all the characters, fatalities, famous quotes, and of course the Mortal Kombat song. The downside is that interdimensional fighting competitions turned out to be pretty cheesy.
The game Silent Hill was all about atmosphere, occult stuff and some really messed-up imagery. The film nailed that stuff. The story was weak, but we got the classic look and fan-favorite characters. And if you wanna see how messed up this movie really was, search Christabella’s death scene — although that’s not recommended.
The Resident Evil movie franchise is exhausting, but the first movie borrowed just enough from the game to make it function: lots of crazy, mutated zombies, an evil corporation, and people dying to survive. It was … decent.
With Tomb Raider, the casting was what kind of worked because, you know, Angelina Jolie. But other than that, it was kind of stupid.
And we’re running out of gas already. The bottom line is that the best video game movies are the ones based on video games as a general concept — movies like Wreck-It Ralph, Tron, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Wizard.
