Will Smith Says He and 'Suicide Squad' Costar Jared Leto 'Never Actually Met'

Suicide Squad costars Will Smith and Jared Leto took this supervillain thing very seriously.

Smith — who plays Deadshot in the upcoming superhero thriller about a Dirty Dozen-style team of anti-heroes — told Beats 1 Radio’s Zane Lowe that his co-star went so deep into the demented mindset of his character, the Joker, on the set of the DC Comics film that the two didn’t exchange a single word when the cameras weren’t rolling. “I’ve never actually met Jared Leto,” Smith said. “We worked together for six months, and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘action’ and 'cut.’ We’ve never said 'hello,’ we’ve never said 'good day.’ I’ve only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker. I literally have not met him yet.”

Leto’s tatted-up, crazy-eyed Joker has been the source of much fan consternation since director David Ayer first tweeted a photo of him in April. (There have also been a series of wild tales from the set including Leto’s bizarre gift to costar Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn, and the cast’s amateur tattooing session when the shoot wrapped.) Smith’s comments should lend some new intrigue to the project, a lesser-known superhero commodity aiming for the type of surprise achieved by Marvel’s wild-card hit Guardians of the Galaxy. (The movie hits theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.)

Smith stopped by Beats 1 Radio to chat mostly about his return to music — Bomba Estéreo’s new “Fiesta” remix marks his first rap verse in a decade. He’ll next be seen in the December NFL drama Concussion.

Lowe, however, nudged him for scoop on what could be one of his next roles, Bad Boys 3, in the wake of recent comments by Martin Lawrence that a new sequel in the buddy cop series was coming soon. “There’s a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a Bad Boys within the next 12 to 16 months,” Smith said.

As for his Suicide Squad “buddy” Leto? “ I’m looking forward to meeting him,” Smith said.
