Box office results this year have reminded us yet again that moviegoers love horror, and never more so than in the days and weeks leading up to Halloween. However, it’s not just paying audiences who love the horror genre — it’s actors and directors too, as a new video from the U.K.’s Film4 channel (as reported on by IndieWire; watch the clip above) ably reconfirms.

As a spooky-themed weekend approaches, the channel sat down with several filmmakers to hear about their fondness for the malevolent and the macabre. In the nearly 10-minute clip, luminaries including Tim Burton, M. Night Shyamalan, and Eli Roth describe their undying affection for all things creepy. From Burton talking about how the “monster craze” affected him as a kid, to M. Night Shyamalan’s youthful pranks with a Ouija board, to Roth’s memories of watching a double-feature of 1982’s Pieces and Basket Case with his parents — which may explain a lot about how Roth (‘the freak in the neighborhood”) grew up to be director of Hostel and The Green Inferno — this video radiates a genuine passion for what is too commonly derided as the most disreputable of cinematic styles.
