Watch Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons Hit the Skins (and Each Other) in the Exclusive 'Whiplash' Trailer

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, moviegoers and critics found themselves with a severe case of Whiplash. The dark drama — which stars Divergent's Miles Teller and Juno's J.K. Simmons — was a breakout hit at the festival, eventually winning both the grand jury and audience awards. Thanks to the new trailer — available exclusively on Yahoo Movies — those of us who couldn't make it to Park City can finally get an idea of why the film drummed up so much attention.

Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, Whiplash casts Teller as Andrew, an ambitious young jazz drummer, while Simmons plays Terence, the leader of an esteemed orchestra. ”I push people beyond what’s expected of them,” Terence warns, and soon enough, we watch their relationship devolve from a chummy teacher-pupil give-and-take to a twisted, abusive showdown, as Terence pushes Andrew to the breaking point. By the end of the clip, Teller is pounding his drums like John Bonham on a bender, and we’re feeling a bit beat-up ourselves by this enthralling, bracing first-look.

Whiplash opens Oct. 10.
