Mark Wahlberg Bets His Bottom Dollar in First Full ‘Gambler’ Trailer

While the F-bomb-laced first look at The Gambler that we debuted last month got us excited for the upcoming Mark Wahlberg thriller, it didn’t reveal much in the way of plot. We’ve now got a full trailer to soak in, with all new sequences of Wahlberg’s gambling degenerate/college professor betting it all on black (and losing), falling for a student (Brie Larson) who will help guide his redemption, tangling with a very badass-looking (and bald) John Goodman, and getting a good smacking from both and an angry loan shark (Michael K. Williams) and his mama (Jessica Lange) in the process.

The Gambler is a remake of the 1974 James Caan film of the same name, and reunites Wahlberg with his Oscar-winning Departed writer William Monahan. (The fact that the trailer uses the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” as its soundtrack may be a nod to Martin Scorsese, who was once slated to direct before Rupert Wyatt took over the reins.)

Wahlberg dropped a cool 60 pounds for the role, and he told us all about it — like how he tortured himself by going to restaurants just to smell the food, for instance — in an rollicking recent interview, which you can read here.

The Gambler opens in select theaters Dec. 19.
