Watch a Scene from William H. Macy’s Feature Directing Debut ‘Rudderless’

When actors take a turn in the director’s chair, they tend to go either very big (Mel Gibson’s Braveheart) or very intimate (Dustin Hoffman’s recent Quartet). Rudderless, the directorial feature debut of Shameless star William H. Macy, looks to be firmly in the latter category. Check out our exclusive scene from the movie above.

The film stars Billy Crudup as an advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the death of his son. While combing through the young man’s belongings, the distraught father discovers the music compositions the boy left behind, and begins to get to know his son anew through his songs, ultimately forming a rock band to perform them.

In the scene above, a young musician played by Anton Yelchin begins to open Crudup’s mind to the depth and sensitivity of his son’s compositions, setting up a moment of bonding between the two, through the lost boy’s music.

One of the benefits of being an esteemed actor is you’ve got a lot of famous colleagues to call on.  And Rudderless boasts a top-shelf supporting cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Selena Gomez, and Macy’s wife, Felicity Huffman.

The film opens in theaters and will be available on VOD on Oct. 17.
