We Dare You to Watch This Scene From 'Goodnight Mommy' (and Not Hide Under the Covers)

Following such atmospheric scary movies as It Follows and The Babadook, Goodnight Mommy’s eeriness promises to linger in your mind in disturbing ways. Don’t believe us? Judge for yourself in this exclusive peek at a super-creepy scene (above).

This buzzy indie horror film out of Austria revolves around twin boys who believe their bandaged mother, who has just undergone facial-reconstruction surgery, has been body-snatched by an evil impostor. Here she lurks outside their room before barging in and searching it as if they were a couple of unruly inmates. The hair-raising question remains: if she finds their cat under the bed, what exactly will she do with it?

Directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, Goodnight Mommy has been touring the festival circuit since last fall and is finally opening in select theaters this weekend. But brace yourself: What starts out as purely psychological fright ends up “almost unbearably brutal,” notes the AV Club. Called “brilliantly sinister” by Entertainment Weekly and “squirm-inducing… with cult potential” by The Hollywood Reporter, Mommy looks to be worth the nightmares it may cause.
