Cobie Smulders was not in the first Jack Reacher movie, but she’s already looking like a highlight of the upcoming sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
The How I Met Your Mother/Avengers actress plays Susan Turner, the commanding officer of the titular vigilante’s old unit in the Army Military Police Corps.
In the exclusive clip above, Turner ain’t taking no mess from Reacher (Tom Cruise), even as he turns up to bust her out of military lockdown. It’s Reacher who does the brunt of the arse-whooping here, but it’s also clear the tough-talking Turner is a force to be reckoned with, not unlike Smulders’s stalwart agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill in Marvel’s Avengers films.
In Never Go Back — the sequel to the 2012 hit Jack Reacher — Cruise’s hero is a fugitive on the run to clear his name, a task Turner will surely assist him with. Based on the book by Lee Child, written for the screen by Edward Zwick, Richard Wenk, and Marshall Herskovitz, the film also stars Robert Knepper (Prison Break), Danika Yarosh (Project Almanac), and Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton).
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opens in theaters Oct. 21.
