Watch This for Everything You Need to Know About 'Dope,' the Surprise Movie of the Summer

Critics are abuzz over the inner-city coming-of-age film Dope, hitting theaters this weekend. But if you’re still not clear on what the hype is about, the above excusive behind-the-scenes look at the comedy should give you the 4-1-1.

Newcomer Shameik Moore explains his eccentric character, Malcolm — a brainy high school kid in Inglewood, California, who boldly dances to the beat of his own '90s hip-hop drum. “Malcolm and his friends just don’t fit into the environment because they are smart and wanting to progress,” says the 20-year-old actor.

His friends have to navigate the rough streets of their neighborhood just to get to school. As Tony Revolori’s character Jib points out: There’s no Waze-like traffic app for avoiding gangbangers. It’s geographically inevitable — these well meaning straightedge types are forced into shady dealings with the criminal element they’ve spent their young lives avoiding.

You can find out this weekend if they come out of their predicament unscathed. Dope also stars newcomer Kiersey Clemons, Blake Anderson (Workaholics), and Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road).
