Harry Potter Fans Play Real-Life Quidditch in Exclusive Clips From Documentary 'Mudbloods'

The best way to pretend you’re a student at Hogwarts is to head down to Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where you can ride into the castle and slug down butterbeer. The next best thing? Pick up the nearest broom and try your hand at Quidditch. If that sounds too intense for you, now there’s a documentary that will transport you into the trenches of the highly competitive emerging college sport.

Mudbloods, a new film by director Farzad Sangari, follows the upstart UCLA Quidditch team as it makes its way to the 2011 World Cup in New York, a magical journey through nerdiness and rugged athleticism. (The Muggle participants follow the rules as laid out by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series, though they swap actual flying for running with brooms between their legs.) We’ve got two exclusive clips from the movie: The first a peek instead the surprisingly rough gameplay and the second an introduction to the world’s No. 1 Harry Potter fan.

Mudbloods is a charming movie about breaking stereotypes, empowering geeks, and recognizing sheer physical accomplishment of all stripes. “You have this person who might be an über nerd, but is also tremendously athletic. All those things that we have to compartmentalize people are erased,” Sangari told Canada.com in a recent interview. “And that’s why Quidditch is so appealing to so many people. I think a certain segment of that population will never really understand this, and that’s okay.”

Sangari is a UCLA alum who first discovered the game while on campus, and soon decided that it would be the perfect subject for a documentary. He has spoken of his fear that Quidditch players might think he was mocking them, but found that they were a very welcoming group. “One of the things that most impressed me about Quidditch was the level of sportsmanship I observed not just on each team, but between the teams,” Sangari added in a conversation with top Potter fansite, The Leaky Cauldron. “Because of the idiosyncratic nature of the game, and also I think because of its connection to Harry Potter, there’s a strong level of respect even amongst the teams that play the hardest against each other.”
