WATCH: Silent Neil Patrick Harris Presents Most Awkward Oscars Ever

If you thought that Anne Hathaway and James Franco represented the pinnacle of Oscar-hosting awkwardness, think again: A new video — which you can watch above — turns Neil Patrick Harris’ fairly successful opening monologue and Birdman gag from the 2015 Oscars into the most cringe-worthy three minutes on the internet. And YouTube user user Bill Smith accomplished it with one editing trick: removing the actor’s dialogue. The music, applause, and reaction shots are still there, as well as every odd pause. But without Harris’ jokes and songs, the show basically consists of the host pointing at celebrities and everyone in the audience laughing uproariously. It’s a very surreal viewing experience, enhanced by clever sound effects (including the slow chomp of Michael Keaton’s gum).  By the time Harris comes onstage in his underwear, it feels like we’re inside his own personal nightmare – or possibly, a very high-budget version of Cooper’s dream from Twin Peaks. To re-watch Harris’ actual Oscar monologue, jokes and all, go here. (h/t AV Club)
