Watch R2-D2's 'Star Wars' Scenes With Subtitles

R2-D2 seems like an amiable enough droid, but what if his beeps and chirps were secretly dripping with British sarcasm? In this new video from audio-visual artist Jonny Wilson, a.k.a Eclectic Method, R2-D2’s key scenes from all six Star Wars films are enhanced with subtitles to reveal his real feelings about Anakin, C-3PO, and the swamps of Dagobah.

In reality, the droid’s “dialogue” is not a real language; sound designer Ben Burtt composed his lines with a combination of human voice sounds and a synthesizer keyboard. “There wasn’t any precedent in movies for a character like a robot that was to be so expressive, but not using words in English or any other language,” Burtt told NPR in 2010, saying that the final R2-D2 voice was “50 percent electronic and 50 percent human.” For more Eclectic Method videos, visit Wilson’s Vimeo channel.
