Watch Biz Markie and Channing Tatum Sing 'Just a Friend' at Comic-Con

One of the best things about San Diego Comic-Con is the random, absolutely unexpected moments. While it wasn’t announced – and sure, it’s a much bigger deal in the grand scheme of things – we all knew Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. were going to trot out Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot for a first look at the Batman v. Superman cast together.

What absolutely no one could’ve predicted was a surprise appearance by old-school rapper and Yo Gabba Gabba guest star Biz Markie during Fox’s panel for its October animated release, Book of Life. After unveiling the first footage from the film — which included an animated Biz Markie wailing out his 1989 hit “Just a Friend” — the rapper appeared onstage alongside the Book of Life crew (director Jorge R. Guiterrez, producer Guillermo del Toro, and stars Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate, and Ron Perlman) and wailed out the song for the more than 6,000 Con-goers in attendance.

Though Biz only performed the song’s famous hook, and none of the verses — at one point inviting all of Hall H to join in for an a cappella rendition — the best part came when the rapper cozied up next to Tatum and tried to get him to join in. It didn’t fully work, as you can see in the clip Fox has made available above, but it was a good effort, and didn’t take away from one spontaneously sublime moment. Once again, the Biz proved that he’s got what we need.

And while you’re here, watch Channing Tatum talk about his glorious Book of Life mustache in an interview from the Yahoo Movies Comic-Con suite:
