Warren Beatty Reveals Why He Came Back to Make 'Rules Don't Apply'

Warren Beatty, who’s back in the public eye as he promotes his new film, Rules Don’t Apply, was on Today and chatted with Matt Lauer about why he’s returning with a new movie. Turns out, it’s actually pretty simple. “You know, I’ve never made a lot of movies,” he said. “I always have kind of had something in the back of my mind, and then finally I guess I have to face facts and get around and do it.”

Beatty “getting around and doing it” took him 40 years, by the way. 40! The Hollywood icon, looking great at 79, also chatted about what he wants to do with his golden years.

“What do your role in Hollywood to be in the business now, in Hollywood now? I don’t mean a movie role, in the larger community of Hollywood?” Lauer asked. “I always have an idea in the back of my mind, and I always try to avoid going to work,” Beatty replied with a laugh.

Beatty also touched on his marriage with Annette Bening. Lauer asked him if he thought his nearly 25-year marriage had surprised people. “It didn’t really surprise me,” Beatty said, smiling. “I always felt that I wasn’t trying to avoid marriage, I was trying to avoid divorce. I had no doubt when I met Annette that it was time to get married.”
