NBC's "The Voice" beat Fox's "The X Factor" in head-to-head competition Wednesday as NBC won the night overall, according to preliminary numbers. "Modern Family" was the top-rated show and led ABC to No. 2 in the ratings.

NBC had a 3.2 rating/9 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and came in second in total viewers with 9.3 million. "The Voice," airing from 8-10 p.m., scored a 3.7/10 and 10.4 million total viewers compared to a 2.7/7 and 7 million for "X Factor." The head-to-head matchup did seem to dent "The Voice": It was down 20 percent in the ratings from last Tuesday's episode, while "X Factor" barely slipped. But "The Voice" also scored NBC's highest in-season rating in the time period since January 2008. Thanks in part to the lead-in, "Chicago Fire" hit a series high of 2.3/6 in the demo, and had 7.1 million viewers.
