Vice Media is continuing its expansion across Asia with the launch of Vice Indonesia.
The youth media brand announced a pair of partnerships Tuesday to establish a "full-scale operation" in Jakarta, producing local content and providing creative agency services. The company has similar setups in Japan and South Korea.
Vice signed a deal with with local Indonesian television network Jawa Pos TV to air Vice News Tonight, the recently launched daily news show on HBO, every night in a primetime slot. Select VICELAND programming will also air on the network during primetime, the two partners said. Jawa Pos TV says that once current infrastructure upgrades are complete, its network will reach 150 million people in Indonesia.
Through a second partnership with Google, VICE will create digital content and social events with local talent, showcasing youth culture and nightlife across Indonesia.
Vice highlighted Indonesia's youthful demographics as being a good fit for the brand. With 249 million citizens, Indonesia is the world's fourth-most populous nation, and young people aged 18-34 are estimated to comprise 50 percent of the country's total population.
"With Indonesia's massive young audience increasingly consuming video content across all screens, launching Vice here is a no brainer," said Vice co-president James Schwab in a statement.
Added Ardyan M Erlangga, Vice's new managing editor for Indonesia: "The country is a diverse, complicated, and incredibly exciting place that is full of under-covered stories, unique characters, and young people hungry for compelling content."
In June, Vice unveiled a slate of international deals that will make its programming available in over 50 new territories in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East and India over the next year.
To date in Asia, Vice has operated out of Japan, China and South Korea. In October, Vice launched branded VICELAND blocks, which will eventually become 24- hour VICELAND channels, in 18 Southeast Asian territories, through a partnership with local media company MultiChannels Asia. In total, VIce's programming will be available in over 80 territories by the end of 2018.
