The footage shown off in Hall H at Comic-Con got a standing ovation last July, but the rest of the world who couldn’t make the trip down to San Diego have since had to take our word for it that Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets looks incredible. Accept second-hand accounts no longer, however, as the first teaser trailer for the Luc Besson-directed space opera has finally arrived. Watch it above now.
Based on the classic French comic series Valérian and Laureline by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières that debuted in 1967, the film stars Dane DeHaan as Valerian and and Cara Delevingne as Laureline. The duo, a pair of 28th century government agents tasked with maintaining peace and order throughout the universe, embark on a mission to the city of Alpha, an enormous metropolis housing of thousands of different species from all over the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.
Written and directed by Besson, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand is due in theaters July 21 and also stars Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, and Kris Wu. And PS: It’s worth noting that Valérian and Laureline was a huge influence on Besson, who has considered the series his favorite work since he was 10. Besson would go on to hire Mézières as a concept designer for The Fifth Element, a film that owes more than just an aesthetic to the comic.
