Unrated 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Blu-ray Will Include Alternate Ending

Get ready for a Fifty Shades of Grey that pushes even more boundaries. An unrated version of the blockbuster romance is coming to Digital HD on May 1 and Blu-ray/DVD on May 8, along with the tantalizing promise of an alternate ending. Watch a teaser above.

Universal hasn’t released details about the new ending, but given author E.L. James’ heavy involvement in the film, it’s unlikely to be a big departure from her bestselling novel. If we had to speculate, we see two possibilities. (Warning: spoilers to follow.) One is that the alternate ending includes a coda of heroine Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), having experienced true pain at the hands of billionaire bad boy Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), breaking down in tears after leaving him. While the movie shows Anastasia exiting Christian’s apartment with her head held high, the novel ends with her back in her own bed, sobbing in grief over the break-up.

Another possibility is that the “alternate ending” changes just one word. During production, director Sam Taylor-Johnson reportedly had a major disagreement with James over one of the last lines in the movie, uttered by Anastasia at the elevator doors to Christian’s pad. Those who saw the film will recall that she tells Christian “stop.” However, in the ending reportedly preferred by Taylor-Johnson, Anastasia stopped Christian from pursuing her by saying the couple’s agreed-upon safe word, “red.” Did Taylor-Johnson film this version just for the DVD? We’ll all find out in May.

So far, Fifty Shades of Grey is the biggest movie of 2015, bringing in over $500 million worldwide. A planned film adaptation of the second book, Fifty Shades Darker appears to be moving forward slowly, with reports saying that James is demanding control over the script, the stars are seeking raises, and director Taylor-Johnson may be exiting the franchise. “We literally have no idea what we’re going to do,” producer Dana Brunetti recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I have not even met with the studio or anybody yet about the second film.”
