Trailer Debut: Buzzy Indie Drama 'Animals' Emerges

For more than a year now, a small but vocal group of critics has been raving about the indie drama Animals. Now the festival darling, a semi-autobiographical tale written by and starring David Dastmalchian (2013’s Prisoners and Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man), is finally nearing release — and the film’s trailer is debuting right here on Yahoo Movies.

Set to a soft, dreamy tune by Los Angeles folk-pop band Lavender Diamond, the trailer offers a peek into the lives of a young Chicago couple whose love is tested amid drug addiction. “Grimy and sad but not sensationalistic,” Hollywood Reporter critic John DeFore says of the movie, by first-time director Collin Schiffli.“The debut feature is like Drugstore Cowboy drained of its hipness and sex appeal — not a bad thing, certainly, but also not something that ensures strong commercial prospects beyond a limited arthouse run,” DeFore adds.

Animals opens in select theaters May 15.
