George Clooney Looks to the Future in the First 'Tomorrowland' Trailer

Space Mountain is legendary, but the above first teaser for Disney’s upcoming movie Tomorrowland boasts a ride that may blow your mind.

The sci-fi adventure film, which springs from a partnership with Lost writer Damon Lindelof and The Incredibles director Brad Bird, has been cloaked in mystery since it was first announced. Now, with this teaser and a press reveal at New York Comic-Con, we’re starting to get an idea of the exciting world the team has been building.

The film stars Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) as Casey Newton, a teenager who grew up watching space shuttle launches at Cape Canaveral. As NASA — and the rest of the world — withered into chaos and disappointment, she dreamed of a new place filled with hope and possibilities. In the teaser above, we see her instantly transported to that kind of world via a special pin; at the end, we find George Clooney, who plays Frank Walker, a former boy genius–turned–jaded inventor, talking about a “miraculous place where you could actually change the world.”

In many ways, Casey’s dreams are linked to Walt Disney’s great interest in technology and progress, which he channeled into exhibits at the World’s Fair, Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, and the original plans for EPCOT.

“What Hogwarts is to magic, Tomorrowland is to science: They are both easy to find if you are a wizard and very difficult to find if you’re a Muggle,” Lindelof recently told Entertainment Weekly. “Walt Disney is not a character in our movie, but he is referenced as having some involvement in this mysterious place called Tomorrowland, as a huge futurist and aficionado of space travel, rocketry, cities of the future, and space travel.”

That spirit of discovery lives on in Clooney’s Walker — if Casey can help him find it again. “There’s something about George,” Bird told EW. “You can see the wheels turning in his eyes, and he reads as somebody who is very principled. He seems like a very pragmatic guy who also dreams, but he’s not flighty. There’s an integrity to him that you feel.”

The filmmakers first teased the film back at the D23 fan convention last August, where they displayed a number of mysterious artifacts in a futuristic pavilion including a hoax photo of Walt Disney with Amelia Earhart from 1945 and “long lost” animation found on a record disc dated back to 1963. Enough mystery for you? All will be revealed on May 22, 2015, when the film finally hits theaters.
