Tom Cruise Punches His Way Through First 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' Clip

Tom Cruise is back as former government operative Jack Reacher in this fall’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and as made clear by the first official footage from the film, he’ll be spending the majority of his latest adventure punching, kicking, running, and then punching some more. Watch it above.

Cruise’s co-star Cobie Smulders debuted the first footage from Never Go Back — all of it seemingly taken from an upcoming trailer — on Entertainment Tonight, where she explained that the story will find Cruise’s Reacher going on the run with her framed-for-a-crime-she-didn’t-commit military officer. At that point, Smulders says, “All hell breaks loose,” which is confirmed by the segment’s numerous scenes of explosions, gunfire, and fisticuffs.

Directed by Ed Zwick (who previously teamed with Cruise on 2003’s The Last Samurai), Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is based on the novel of the same name by Lee Childs, and looks like it’ll deliver the same brand of stripped-down, no-nonsense Man of Action mayhem that made 2012’s original Jack Reacher such a superb vehicle for its star. As Smulders says, “We’re on the run for this entire movie,” which suggests that the sequel will provide a steady stream of adrenalized combat and chaos – and, in the process, allow the former How I Met Your Mother actress to get more opportunities to brawl with bad guys than she did as Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back hits theaters on Oct. 21, and you can check out ET’s exclusive sneak peek above.
