Artificial Intelligence Gets Tricky in 'Ex Machina' Trailer

“To erase the line between man and machine is to obscure the line between men and gods.” That ominous quote opens the teaser trailer for Ex Machina, a science-fiction thriller that explores the relationship between two computer programmers and an artificially intelligent life form. Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) plays internet-search company employee Caleb Smith, who wins a competition to spend a week with the company’s brilliant, fiercely private CEO, Nathan Bateman (played by Gleeson's fellow Star Wars: Episode VII traveler Oscar Isaac). When Caleb arrives, he’s shocked to learn that Bateman has secretly created a robot (Alicia Vikander), and wants Caleb to participate in a Turing Test to determine whether his creation, named Ava, has a human-like consciousness. As Caleb gets to know the alluring Ava, he begins to question Bateman’s motivations for this experiment — and sees that Ava may have an agenda of her own. Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, whose extensive sci-fi screenwriting resume includes 28 Days Later…, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go. The R-rated film opens in theaters on April 10, 2015.
