'The Zookeeper's Wife' Trailer: Jessica Chastain Versus the Nazis
Jessica Chastain is already earning strong reviews for her turn in Miss Sloane, a legal thriller that’s out on Nov. 25. After that fearsome turn however, she’ll shift gears to portray an ordinary woman who became an extraordinary hero when she risked her life (and those of her children) to save others — both human and animal — in The Zookeeper’s Wife, a movie based on real events that’s just released its first trailer above.
In the upcoming drama from director Niki Caro (Whale Rider), Chastain plays Antonina Zabinska, the wife of a zookeeper in World War II-era Poland who chooses to defy the Nazi occupiers by hiding Jews in her family’s compound and zoo facilities. Her story — which also involves the Reich’s newly- appointed chief zoologist (played by Captain America: Civil War’s very German Daniel Brühl) — is an adaptation of Diane Ackerman’s non-fiction book of the same name. From the looks of its initial promo, it seems to be a stirring wartime saga cast in a familiar, Schindler’s List mold, as well as a sturdy star vehicle for the always magnetic Chastain.
Co-starring Johan Heldenbergh, Michael McElhatton and Iddo Goldberg, The Zookeeper’s Wife arrives in theaters on March 31, 2017, as some serious counter-programming to the summer blockbusters that will already be crowding multiplex screens.
