The 'Whiplash' Parodies Come Rushing Out

Birdman was the go-to movie to spoof this past awards weekend (see both the Spirit Awards and Oscars), but Whiplash, the indie hit that won J.K. Simmons a Best Supporting Academy Award, is the go-to movie to spoof this month. There’s just something about getting screamed at about “rushing or dragging” the tempo by a bald man that makes for sublime satire. Here are five good ones we’ve seen in the last few weeks alone… and there’ll probably be plenty more to come.

DJ Wh1PLA$H

Though it’s more a spoof of electronic dance music DJs — “Are you pushing or are you pressing?!” — than it is of the film, this parody “passes the dopeness that’s expected” of it. [Nacho Punch].

Steep Whiplash

For a more laid-back take on Whiplash, look no further than this ganja-laced “steel band” version, which is also a send-up of Calypso music — or, as one character explains, “the stuff that’s played by hotel pools at resorts in the Caribbean.” [Above Average]

“Weird Al” Gets Whiplash

Of course you knew the reigning king of the musical spoof had to get involved. And of course you knew there’d be an accordion involved. [College Humor]

Saturday Night Live

J.K. Simmons, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar on Sunday for Whiplash, sent up his own perfect-tempo chasing character during his monologue hosting SNL. Best moment: When Leslie Jones hollers back at him. [NBC]

Tosh.0 – Web Redemption

Daniel Tosh sported a terrible bald cap and got into the act on his late-night staple. Of course, you’re going to have to sit through a real-life drummer puking on his kit first, though. [Comedy Central]

And while it’s not quite in the same vein as the five above, Simon Fransman’s Whiplash as a Sitcom is loaded with laughs (literally and figuratively). Stick with this one and you’ll be rewarded.
