‘The Revenant’s’ Iñárritu wins top DGA prize, further obscuring awards season

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s bid for Oscars glory was boosted Saturday as he took top prize at the Directors Guild of America honors. IIñárritu was crowned best director for revenge and survival epic “The Revenant,” becoming the first director in the Guild’s history with back-to-back DGA wins. Just twelve months ago Iñárritu picked up the prize for dark comedy “Birdman,” and is vying to repeat the feat at the Oscars.

This hug, this embrace you are giving me today goes to a small country, to a whole Latin American community in this country…Your embrace makes me feel proud.

But with only weeks to go before the Academy Awards on Feb. 28, the race is still as wide open as ever. So far this year industry awards from the Screen Actors Guild, the Producers Guild and now the DGA have gone to different films, with actors choosing “Spotlight” and producers honoring “The Big Short." Both "Spotlight” director Tom McCarthy and “The Big Short” director Adam McKay were nominated for the DGA prize and will be competing for the best director Oscar as well. Others in competition included George Miller for “Mad Max: Fury Road” and Ridley Scott for “The Martian.”
