The New Guy ‘Ghostbusters’ is Still Happening, But Details are Sketchy

Paul Feig’s female-focused Ghostbusters reboot is in the midst of a production that has been well-chronicled in tweets and Instagram photos, so we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is coming at some point to a big screen near you. The proposed all-male reboot from Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo however, is a bit more of a mystery.

The latest update on that film, which has been rumored to be seeking beefcake funny guys Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum as its stars, comes to us via MTV, which spoke to the film’s writer, Drew Pearce, at the premiere of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, on which he also has a writing credit. According to Pearce, it’s still all systems go.

“I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks,” he told the site. “Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!”

Pearce acknowledged that they’d love to have Pratt and Tatum in his ghost-busting squad, but said he had no real control over how the cast shakes out. More curiously, he spoke to the notion that the film could be connected with Feig’s new Ghostbusters, in the sort of multiverse that film studios crave these days.

“My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same Ghostbusters universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want,” he said. “Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.”

Feig, however, told Yahoo Movies earlier this year that he had no desire to link his ‘busters with any other potential films in a would-be franchise.

“Honestly, that has nothing to do with us at all,” he said. “It was a surprise when it was announced, and it remains a surprise. All I’m doing is concentrating on mine.”

Clearly, he was not all that pleased with the rival Ghostbusters, so he’ll probably have some strong thoughts about Pearce’s new pitch.
