The New 'Bridget Jones's Baby' Trailer Has Daddy Issues

In a year of sequels and reboots, audiences will be getting another blast from the rom-com past with this fall’s Bridget Jones’s Baby. The third installment in the series about Renée Zellweger’s prat-falling British singleton, the sequel comes 11 years after the last movie Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason and represents a big departure from the Helen Fielding novels that inspired the series. (Sharon Maguire, who helmed the original Bridget Jones’s Diary in 2001, returns to direct.) This time around, our beloved Bridge is expecting a baby. It’s no surprise though, that this is far from an ordinary pregnancy.

In the new trailer above, we get a clearer sense of exactly how Bridget ended up in this particular pregnancy pickle. She’d just started dating handsome American Jack (Patrick Dempsey) when she has an unexpected tryst with her ex Mark (Colin Firth), meaning she has no idea who the father is and gets no help at all from her no-nonsense OB/GYN (a fabulously droll Emma Thompson, who also cowrote the screenplay). When both men step up for daddy duties, Bridget struggles between her feelings for them, as well as the typical trials and tribulations of pregnancy.

In the trailer, Bridget laments her continual number of mistakes even as she gets older. However, I’m sure a good number of women would say that choosing between Mr. Darcy and McDreamy is not a necessarily bad predicament. Perhaps she should just take her doctor’s advice and just pretend it’s like voting on The X Factor?

Bridget Jones’s Baby can be seen in theaters on Sept.16.
