The Cast of 'Bring It On' Reunited and Talked About the Time They Were Arrested in Mexico

Fifteen years after the Toros and the Clovers met in that epic cheerleading championship, the cast of Bring It On reunited to reminisce about their surprise 2000 hit teen movie.

Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union, Eliza Dushku, and Jesse Bradford relived the good old days for Entertainment Weekly’s annual Reunions issue, dishing on-set anecdotes and off-set secrets about director Peyton Reed’s little teen movie about dueling cheer squads at two California high schools. As much as the film was aimed at teenagers, things weren’t always so innocent when the long shooting days were over. The production shot near Mexico, which meant some afterhours field trips. Dushku (who played the reluctant gymnast-turned-cheerleader Missy) and Jesse Bradford (who played Missy’s rebellious brother Cliff) were among those who got on the wrong side of the law on the other side of the border.

“It was me, Eliza, Rini Bell, and this dude Lance, one of the male cheerleaders on the Toros,” Bradford told EW. “I’m gonna blur the details of how and why, but needless to say, we got arrested. We had to go in front of a judge — I use that term loosely here — and explain what happened, and he let us go…”

We’ll probably never know what they did to get thrown behind bars, though. Dushku added that while their antics were captured on disposable cameras, the film was never developed. Which, obviously, is a huge shame, 15 years later.

Dushku, who was then famous for playing Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, also remembers having a bit of trouble buying into the whole school-spirit thing. “The hardest thing was getting the cheer faces,” Dushku recalled. “I was kind of a scowly kid. I’m a perfectionist, so I got the dance moves down, but they had to really teach me to just keep that grin.”

Union, on the other hand, might not want to hear that smiling was the hardest part of the job. “I played soccer, basketball, and track, and nothing can prepare you for what cheerleaders go through,” said the actress, who played Isis, the leader of the Clovers squad. “Those rehearsals were some of the lower points in my life — I questioned my very existence. Everything hurt. That’s probably why there are a lot of close-ups of me, not wide shots.” Read more from the interview over at EW.com.
