'The Boss' Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Makes a Killing in the Cookie Biz

If Martha Stewart and a pre-presidential candidate Donald Trump had a baby, she’d end up a whole lot like Melissa McCarthy’s latest zany character.

On Thursday night, Univeral dropped the first trailer for The Boss, McCarthy’s next big movie, which is due out on April 8. The Oscar-nominated actress plays Michelle Darnell, a high-powered and fabulously wealthy corporate executive whose flashy lifestyle falls apart when she’s sent to jail for insider trading. When she emerges from prison six months later, she’s gone from posing on the cover of Forbes to crashing on the sofa bed of her overly loyal assistant (Kristen Bell).

Directed by McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone (who helmed the less-than-sterling Tammy), The Boss becomes a redemption story as Darnell tries to remodel herself as America’s sweetheart by taking charge of a struggling Girl Scouts troop. One thing she didn’t lose in her time in the clink was a keen business sense — and willingness to play dirty. So the ostentatious former exec dedicates herself to transforming a bunch of second-rate cookie peddlers into a sash-wearing sweets-selling army. (The trailer’s got shades of the cult favorite 1989 scouting comedy Troop Beverly Hills.)

Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote McCarthy’s big screen breakout Bridesmaids, co-stars as Helen, her rival Girl Scout leader who is willing to get just as down and dirty for sales glory. Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Llive), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Kristen Schaal (30 Rock), Margo Martindale (The Millers), and Timothy Simmons (Veep) are among the talented co-stars.
