Verizon keeps spending on premium content for Go90: Next week the mobile-oriented video service will bow “Thanksgiving,” an original half-hour scripted comedy from director and co-creator Daniel Powell, who co-created “Inside Amy Schumer.”
“Thanksgiving” stars Bridey Elliott alongside her real-life father Chris Elliott (“Eagleheart,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Cabin Boy”) and Amy Sedaris (“Strangers with Candy,” “BoJack Horseman”). The eight-episode series, which unfolds in real time, will stream from Nov. 16-23 with a new episode released daily exclusively on Go90.com and the Go90 app, leading up to Thanksgiving this year.
The show, from Complex Networks’ Seriously.TV digital comedy channel, follows the Morgan family over the course of a four-hour span during Thanksgiving Day and the dysfunctional situations that arise during the annual American ritual. Verizon and Hearst formed Complex Networks under their digital-video joint venture earlier this year, combining Complex Media (which they acquired in April) with Seriously.TV and RatedRed.com, aimed at millennials in conservative-leaning states.
Bethany Hall and Daniel Powell created the series, loosely inspired by Hall’s own family. Both write and executive produce, while Powell directs each episode. Elizabeth Rohrbaugh will executive produce along with Complex Networks head of programming and development Justin Killion and development exec Cory Stern. Alex Bach will serve as producer.
“Every year during Thanksgiving, millions of Americans search for a distraction from their families,” said Powell. “Bethany and I are proud to present a series that provides just that.” Added Hall, ““Have you ever brought your boyfriend home for Thanksgiving and realized that your family is a weird piece of performance art? So have I.”
Cast of “Thanksgiving” includes John Reynolds (“Stranger Things”), Griffin Newman (“The Tick”), Veronica Osorio (“Hail, Caesar!”), Josh Ruben (CollegeHumor originals), Josh Sharp (Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre), Moujan Zolfaghari (“The Brothel”), James III (“Late Night with Seth Meyers”) and two time Tony Award-winner John Cullum. Guest appearances include Chris Gethard, Todd Barry, and Miriam Tolan.
Seriously.TV is distributed across Go90, AOL and third-party networks. The channel also will be home to “Embeds,” a six-episode half-hour political comedy from a producing team that includes Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and “Fifty Shades of Grey” producer Michael De Luca. Peter Hamby, a former CNN correspondent who is now head of Snapchat’s news division, and Scott Conroy, co-author of Sarah Palin biography “Sarah From Alaska,” co-created the show and wrote the pilot.
