Ted Melfi is in negotiations to direct New Line’s remake of the 1979 movie Going in Style.

Don Scardino was originally on board the remake but left after the poor performance of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

The original movie was directed by Martin Brest, who went on to direct Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, and (gulp) Gigli.

Style starred George BurnsArt Carney and Lee Strasberg as seniors who, tired of the monotonous life of feeding pigeons and waiting for Social Security checks, decide to rob a bank.

While Scardino was attached, actors such as Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine swirled around. It is unclear whether they will be available or remain interested.

Donald De Line is producing.

Melfi, however, should have no trouble attracting a topnotch cast.  He wrote and directed St. Vincent De Van Nuys, which recently wrapped and whose cast includes Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts.
