Kevin O'Connell, Oscar's Biggest Loser, Finally Wins on 21st Try

The Best Sound Mixing category doesn’t typically get a lot of ink at the Academy Awards, but something truly historic unfolded when the 2017 winner was announced Sunday night. Then, around 9:32 p.m. ET Sunday, O’Connell finally won. “Thank you so much! I can’t even tell you what this means to me,” an exuberant O’Connell, who shared the awards with fellow sound mixers Andy Wright, Robert Mackenzie, and Peter Grace, said as he stepped to the stage to a hearty ovation.

Oscars Survey Says: Most Americans Have No Idea What's Nominated for Best Picture, Who's Hosting the Show

2017’s Academy Awards will be handed out this Sunday night, and forecasters increasingly expect it to come down to a battle between Damien Chazelle’s La La Land and Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight for Best Picture. According to a new poll on all things Oscars by The Hollywood Reporter, however, couldn’t name those two films — or any of the other seven contenders — as nominees for the award. 2017 Oscar Virgins: 7 First-Time Nominees

Meryl Streep is nominated once again for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins. The queen of the big screen broke her own record this year by earning her 20th(!) career Oscar nod – the most for any actor by far (Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are tied for second place with 12 nominations apiece). But even Meryl had a first time – the 67-year-old’s first nomination came back in 1978 for The Deer Hunter, when she was just 29.

It’s in plain sight in the film’s much tamer first act, in which future WWII war hero Desmond Doss vies for the affection of the nurse Dorothy (Teresa Palmer). In the scene, Desmond just wants some sugar from his sweetheart, but it ain’t happening.

Andrew Garfield has not one but two high-profile faith-driven dramas out this winter. First there was Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson’s WWII drama starring Garfield as Desmond Doss, a devout combat medic forbidden by his church from taking up arms yet who managed to save the lives of 75 men at the Battle of Okinawa. Now, the 33-year-old Brit headlines Martin Scorsese’s Silence, an epic retelling of Portuguese priests attempting to keep Catholicism alive during the 17th century Japanese Inquisition.

How 'Hacksaw Ridge' Finally Captured the Unbelievable Story of Reluctant War Hero Desmond Doss

From the beginning, the incredible true story of Desmond Doss seemed destined for a big-screen retelling. The heroic actions of Doss, the subject of the new war film Hacksaw Ridge, first captured public attention in 1945. That’s when the WWII medic, who refused to carry a firearm yet ultimately saved the lives of 75 soldiers on the ferocious frontlines of Okinawa, became the first conscientious objector ever awarded the Medal of Honor.
