'Suicide Squad' Gets a Kick Out of Soccer-Style Intros in New Promo

We’re eight days away from the start of Euro 2016, the quadrennial international soccer (or, as they say across the pond, “football”) tournament, and to celebrate, DC Comics has revealed the line-up for its villainous team, eyed as a possible contender for a summer box-office championship, in a new promo (watch it above).

Warner Bros. and DC piggyback on interest in Euro 2016 to drive this clever intro of its Suicide Squad roster. In writer-director David Ayer’s eagerly awaited comic-book adventure, a team of bad guys — assembled by Viola Davis’s government agent, and led by Will Smith’s assassin Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s psychotic sexpot Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto’s clown prince of crime, The Joker — are forced to pull off a daring mission. In the new promo clip, each of the squad’s members are introduced as if part of a soccer team, replete with “player cards” that feature basic background and personality stats.

While it provides no new footage from the film, Suicide Squad’s latest bit of marketing serves as further confirmation Warner Bros. is prepared to get creative to stoke anticipation for the film, which got off to a good start with fanboy and general audiences alike thanks to its Queen-scored trailers. And the studio is apparently so confident in the project — despite some raised eyebrows about reshoots earlier this year — that talk of a possible Harley Quinn spin-off effort has escalated (thanks in part to Robbie’s enthusiasm for the character).
