'Suicide Squad' Art: Two Sets of 11 Character Posters, and a Pair of Candy-Colored Charmers

UPDATE: After Warner Bros. released its first set of Suicide Squad character posters, it quickly followed up with a brand-new set of comics-inspired imagery, which we’ve added to the front of the slideshow, followed by the earlier group.

ORIGINAL POST: It’s not released until August, but Warner Bros. promo pieces are making sure we don’t forget Suicide Squad is coming. Witness the latest posters, seemingly inspired by Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers and my angst-ridden alternative phase from high school.

Eleven new character posters let each member of Task Force X flaunt their unique identity, like a deranged-looking Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress and a derisive Will Smith as Deadshot. We also get a better look at characters who haven’t received a lot of attention so far, including Adam Beach’s Slipknot, Karen Fukuhara’s Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

The standout, however, is the Imax poster mimicking a Lucky Charms-like cereal bowl — replacing the rainbow marshmallows with katanas and flaming skulls.

The vibrant posters contribute to setting the animated, offbeat tone for Suicide Squad, clearly intent to shake off any hint of self-seriousness. While Batman v Superman piled on the emotional turmoil, Suicide Squad has been marketed as the antithesis, with an eye on fun and style — but, let’s hope, enough of a story to keep us interested.

Suicide Squad opens nationwide on August 5.
