Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan Fight for Their Rights in First 'Suffragette' Trailer

Three years after winning an Oscar for playing iconic conservative British leader Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, Meryl Streep is going even further back in time to play liberal crusader Emmeline Pankhurst.

Behold the first teaser trailer for the historical drama Suffragette, which tells the story of Pankhurst and her win-at-all-costs campaign to secure British women the right to vote in the late 19th and early 20th century. Pankhurst was a firebrand, willing to use violence and arson — as you can see in the trailer — to further the cause of universal suffrage, as well as more equitable conditions for workers, young mothers and poor children.

Carey Mulligan plays a young activist in the film who’s inspired and counseled by Pankhurst and her Springsteen-esque calls to action. Suffragette, which also co-stars Helena Bonham Carter, is directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and hits theaters in the UK in October; there’s no American release date yet set.
