Star Wars: The Force Awakens Set To Break $2 Billion Worldwide

At this point, we rather doubt you need to be told that ‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’ has proved an absolutely massive box office hit of multiple record-breaking proportions.

However, it’s a hit that just keeps on getting bigger, as multiple sources report that Disney’s continuation of the iconic space opera will cross the $2 billion mark at the global box office this weekend, 53 days after it first opened.

Walt Disney Pictures chairman Alan Horn hails this as “a historic moment for ‘Star Wars,’ for Lucasfilm, and for Disney, and all of us here are extremely gratified to be a part of this journey with fans around the world who have made ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ such an extraordinary success.

“The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the ‘Star Wars’ legacy alive for many years to come.”

Having already become the highest grossing film ever in several territories including the US and UK, ‘The Force Awakens’ will only be the third film in history to hit $2 billion (approx £1.38 billion), after James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar.’

Even so, it’s still some way off challenging the final box office haul of either of the top two, ‘Titanic’ having made $2.19 billion, and ‘Avatar’ a truly gargantuan $2.78 billion - and many reports are saying ‘The Force Awakens’ is unlikely to get to that point, ticket sales having slowed down somewhat in recent weeks,

Still, it’s not as if anyone can accuse it of being a flop, is it?

If you’re one of the few who hasn’t gone yet, you can still catch ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in cinemas.
