Let's Look for Clues in that New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Poster

At Disney’s D23 event on Saturday, Lucasfilm unveiled an exclusive, event-only poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Drawn by longtime Star Wars illustrator Drew Struzan, it depicts Star Wars newbies Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), all of them looking primed for a fight. Also making an appearance: Harrison Ford as Han Solo, who’s holding his blaster at the ready. All the while, packs of X-Wings and TIE Fighters hover nearby.

Though the illustration isn’t quite as detail-packed as some of Sturzan’s previous Star Wars outings, there’s plenty here for diehard fans to chew over. The most intriguing reveal is that Boyega’s lightsaber looks similar to the one used by Luke Skywalker in both A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (Luke lost that weapon, of course, when Darth Vader lopped off his hand). We're not saying it actually is Luke's weapon, but it certainly shares its design. "The secret is out," Boyega told Yahoo Movies at the event. "Yes, I have a lightsaber — and it is on. I can't say too much more about it, but I'm happy that the news is out there. How cool is that?"

There are two other classic-trilogy echoes at the bottom of the poster: On the left, we see a silhouette of a machine that looks like a close cousin of the moisture vaporizers used by Luke on the planet Tatooine in A New Hope. And on the lower right, there’s a red dash-dot-dash lighting pattern similar to the one found in the carbonite-freezing chamber from The Empire Strikes Back.

We’ll figure out what all of these images mean — and get a closer look at The Force Awakens — when the movie opens Dec. 18.
