Watch a Lego 'Star Wars' Super Star Destroyer Explode Into Bricks

The over 3,000-piece Lego Star Wars Super Star Destroyer — first released in 2011 — is sadly retired, with used sets selling on eBay for upwards of $800. We’re going to bet, however, that anyone shelling out that much dough for the mega-ship would be aghast if they saw what a few staffers from Wired magazine did with the rare, 50-inch-long behemoth.

After taking 16 hours to assemble the ship, the Wired team members did what only true Battle of Endor scholars would do: They dropped it nose-first onto the floor for a glorious slo-mo video, which you can watch above. They’re paying homage, of course, to one of the most stirring moments in 1983′s Return of the Jedi, when the Rebel Alliance — under the command of Admiral Ackbar— gives the attacking fighters more time by concentrating all their fire on the super star destroyer; the result is a super crash for the ages (see below). Sure, the new video doesn’t have a flaming Death Star. But that explosion of bricks — with doomed minifigs Admiral Piett and Darth Vader! — is the next best thing.
