Star Trek Beyond docks in theaters today, and to celebrate its arrival, the film has released a new promo clip featuring its fearless leader’s rousing oration.

In the minute-long spot, Chris Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk is heard in voiceover articulating his belief in people’s power to change, and in his refusal to leave his comrades behind. Those words have taken on even greater subtextual weight thanks to the film’s decision to reimagine John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu as gay (albeit not via a same-sex kiss, which apparently didn’t make the final cut). However, his soundbites are also of a typical hero-standing-his-ground-amidst-adversity and captain-goes-down-with-the-ship variety, the latter of which seems especially apt given that the accompanying footage involves his craft, the U.S.S. Enterprise, facing seemingly fatal threats, including an attack that takes on the form of an intergalactic tidal wave.

Set to soaring operatic music, Star Trek Beyond’s “We Change” ad — meant to suggest the more action-oriented tack taken by the sequel, and bolstered by critical quotes singing its praises — is looking like the film to beat at this weekend’s box office, with forecasts suggesting that it could rake in as much as $50-$60 million by Sunday. Debuting to strong word of mouth, Fast and the Furious director Justin Lin’s installment in the rebooted franchise is playing in multiplexes nationwide now.
