'Star Trek Beyond' Footage Reveals New Alien, Uniforms

Update: The video referred to below has been taken down.

Original story: Good news for Star Trek fans: the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, in the midst of its five-year mission, has found one of those strange new worlds complete with a life form unlike any we’ve seen before.

Footage from the Vancouver set of Star Trek Beyond, apparently taken by a paparazzo during exterior filming and obtained by ScreenCrush, shows Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), and Scotty (Simon Pegg) emerging from a hatch. They are accompanied by an unknown female alien, with white skin and facial tattoos, played by Sofia Boutella (best known as the formidable blade-legged assassin in Kingsman: The Secret Service). The actors run through the scene — which involves Boutella’s character adjusting some kind of high-tech gadget — and then clown around afterward.

Aside from the new species, the clip also reveals the new-look Starfleet uniforms originally teased by filmmaker Justin Lin at the start of filming in June.

The suits, worn by Kirk and Chekov (but not Scotty, who retains his familiar red shirt), feature durable-looking jackets and padded pants. The crew appears to be equipped with all the usual accoutrements: phaser, communicator and tricorder.

Star Trek Beyond picks up after the events of Star Trek Into Darkness. Lin, best known for his work on the Fast and Furious series, takes over directing chores from J.J. Abrams, who remains as a producer. Pegg and Doug Jung wrote the script. In addition to Pine, Pegg, and Yelchin, the rest of the reboot cast is back: Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (McCoy), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), and John Cho (Sulu). Idris Elba will play the bad guy.

The film, the third in the rebooted franchise, is set for a July 8, 2016 release.
