Unusual Auditions of Oscar Stars
Jamie Foxx, tickling the ivories. Actors sometimes get to meet the people they're portraying, but Ray Charles actually ran Foxx through a musical test for the biopic "Ray" (2004). "He said, 'If you can play the blues, Jamie, you can do anything,'" Foxx recounted to the BBC. Charles played notes and Foxx — who attended college on a piano scholarship — would keep up, until a Thelonious Monk riff had Foxx sweating on the ivories for 15 minutes. "He goes, 'The notes are right there under your fingers, Jamie. You just have to take the time out to find them, young man.'" Once Foxx nailed the chord, Charles granted his blessing. Foxx matched Al Pacino in Oscar history as the only male actor to win two acting Oscar nominations in one year (the second was for "Collateral Damage").
